Renewed direction
Campus compass receives new coat of paint
Stand at the epicenter of the ground mural
outside Laurelville's dining hall and you will quickly grasp your
bearings: Jacobs Creek runs from east to west; Sunset Hill rises
to the southwest; Split Rock hovers above in the southeast; to the
west is Laurelville's wood-burning kiln; the swimming pool draws
you north.
The large compass painted on Laurelville Lane has long been a fixture
at LMCC. Year after year, individuals and teams of volunteers have
stooped to hands and knees in order to repaint the mural, touching
up its edges and restoring its colors.
This year, Bonnie and Merle Lowe of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, performed
the honor of repainting the compass on a beautiful mid-summer day.
Their work was part of a volunteer compensation program, in which
LMCC offsets up to half of the cost of summer camp program registration
in turn for volunteer work performed on campus by parents or grandparents
(if such involvement in the ministry of Laurelville interests you,
please contact Jane Rittenhouse).
With another repainting of the mural, Laurelville is in the midst
of tracking down the complete history of the compass. Perhaps you
remember painting the mural while a summer staff counselor or you
have heard a tale of its origins. If you recall a story that connects
with this tradition at Laurelville, you are invited to share it.
Either email it to us or visit our blog to post it for others to
enjoy.
