Prayer Labyrinth

prayer labyrinth

Walking through a prayer labyrinth can be a spiritually nourishing experience. The labyrinth at Laurelville, found atop Sunset Hill, is a favorite destination for spiritual pilgrims and sojourners alike.

Constructed by staff and volunteers in 2006 using over 10,000 stones to line its paths, the labyrinth on Sunset Hill is modeled after the labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral outside of Paris, France.

It's a spiritual ritual worth experiencing during your stay here at Laurelville.

Walking the prayer labyrinth

You should prepare yourself in order to experience the prayer labyrinth effectively.

We recommend visitors take the 10 minute walk from the main part of campus to the top of Sunset Hill to calm their soul, approaching the labyrinth in silence. The labyrinth can also be reached by car; if you choose to drive, we nevertheless encourage you to maintain a quiet spirit en route to the labyrinth.

Once you enter the labyrinth, there are no wrong turns (a labyrinth differs greatly from a maze in this way; the path, though winding, always leads you to the center).

Proceed at a pace that seems appropriate to you. Center your prayers on the longings of your heart. Repeat a mantra, present your requests, offer words of praise—there is no prescript for what you should pray while walking through a labyrinth, but do seek communion with God.

If others are using the labyrinth, be courteous of their prayerful experience, passing quietly if necessary and respecting the atmosphere of silence.
